Zing! Went the strings of my heart. Do you love the sound of the violin? Cello? Viola?
Did you know Sinfonia Gulf Coast Youth Orchestra is the primary (and premium) place on the Emerald Coast for string players?
Many may not realize that many schools in our area are not offering string programs. Sadly, some schools have string instruments that are not even being used. Clearly, there is a need in our community. Sinfonia Gulf Coast is stepping up to answer the call.
“We’re proud to provide a home for string players across Northwest Florida and excited to have a Beginner Summer Camp underway and to offer even more string-based programs in the near future,” said Sinfonia Gulf Coast music and artistic director Demetrius Fuller.
To spark interest in young string players, Sinfonia Gulf Coast Youth Orchestra music director Aaron King Vaughn is leading a Beginner String Orchestra Summer Camp June 14 through 25 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Destin Community Center.
Tuition is $120 for Destin residents and $125 for non-residents. The camp is limited to 20 students. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (850) 460-8800.
During the 10-day camp string students ages 8 to 12 will experience a variety of instructional methods from Suzuki and other rote memory techniques. No experience is necessary. They will learn music theory, music history and “how to” basics of playing their chosen instrument.
Volunteers from the Sinfonia Youth Orchestra symphony will be on hand to help encourage and mentor students in their new skills.
“We will have fun games that will give our young musicians a chance to demonstrate their skills and, of course, lots of positive encouragement to discover a love for string instruments,” Vaughn says.
The Summer Camp culminates with a free public concert on Saturday, June 25 at 4:30 p.m.
Students who participate and continue on to join Sinfonietta Strings in the fall will receive a $25 reduction in their fall tuition for the group.
